Emerging Star Makes Run at Wyndham

Times-News — Jordan Spieth strung together enough memorable shots in Sunday’s Wyndham Championship that he figured he was primed to come out on top.

“Especially with the momentum I had, I’m dying to win,” he said. “I mean, winning is what it’s all about. … When I’m in position where I’m one-on-one to win a PGA golf tournament, it’s pretty special.”

Spieth, who won his first PGA Tour event as a 19-year-old last month in a playoff at the John Deere Classic, finished as runner-up to Patrick Reed after a two-hole playoff at Sedgefield Country Club.

Spieth’s saving putt on the first playoff hole would have been all the rage if not for Reed’s theatrics one hole later.

“I don’t even know how I was playing (the second playoff hole) after what happened on 18,” Spieth said, referring to the 40-foot putt he sank.

Yet earlier Spieth showed a knack for refocusing. There was a time when his second shot on No. 17 in regulation might have been the defining moment.

As he reached his ball in the 17th fairway, a clamor came from the previous hole and Spieth made a quick glance behind him before turning his attention to his own matters.
