2015 Byron Nelson Championship: Round 2

Golf Channel's David Feherty Sees Both 'Kid' and 'Killer' in Jordan Spieth

David Feherty, a master at talking the talk while walking the walk, has never strolled up a 72nd fairway alongside tournament leader Jordan Spieth.

CBS’ walk man would invite such an experience Sunday at the AT&T Byron Nelson.

Feherty’s job on most of the network golf broadcasts is to shadow the leaders in the final grouping.

He might have walked alongside Spieth at the Masters where he led from wire to wire back in April, but coverage of the tournament is not like CBS’ other broadcasts.

On-course analysis is not welcome at austere Augusta. At the Masters, Feherty is tethered in the 15th tower.

Still Feherty had a Sunday rooting interest in golf’s latest phenom who happens to live nearby in their North Dallas neighborhood.

“I can honestly say I don’t think I have ever been as nervous watching a round of golf,” Feherty said Friday. “And that includes when I played.”

For the record, Spieth birdied the par-5 15th hole on Saturday and Sunday at the Masters. His birdie on Sunday put him at 19-under par, which might have set a Masters record had he not bogied the 72nd and final hole. Instead, Spieth had to settle for tying Tiger Woods’ record.

“I really had to work to be impartial,” said Feherty, who eyeballed the potential record setter. “And I think I failed miserably.”
