Jordan Spieth: Sam Burns More Prepared Than I Was

At first glance, it appeared to be just another day for a teenager. Shreveport's Sam Burns constantly checked his phone, favorited a few tweets, liked some Instagram posts and sent a Snapchat or two.

However, Burns' casual social media browsing took place in the middle of a monumental morning.

The 18-year-old Calvary Baptist Academy senior met one of the PGA Tour's brightest stars, Jordan Spieth, on the driving range around 9 a.m., and the pair joined Tour veteran Ryan Palmer for a practice round at the Valero Texas Open.

This week marks Burns' PGA Tour debut, although you couldn't tell by his calm demeanor at TPC San Antonio.

"It's a big honor; I'm very grateful to be here," said Burns, who earned a spot in this week's event with his victory at the 2014 Junior PGA Championship a few hours north of here in Bryan, Texas. "It's great for junior golf to let kids our age have that opportunity."

Following some small talk on the range – Burns congratulated Spieth on his recent win (No. 2 on Tour) at Valspar and said he was watching – the trio headed to the 10th tee.

Although Burns missed the fairway right on his opening tee shot, a solid up and down for par seemed to calm the nerves.

"(Jordan) said go out and have fun and not to let all the hype get to you," Burns said. "He's been through this. He's young. He knows what it's like. Playing with him – he was a great person to learn from because he's already done this."
