FORT WORTH — Since Jordan Spieth joined Dallas National, he has yet to play with fellow member Hunter Mahan.
They finally got the chance on Thursday at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
The two might consider striking up regular games.
Mahan shot 4-under 66 to finish the first round tied for second, one stroke behind Dustin Johnson. Spieth is a stroke back, tied for sixth.
The other member of their group, Jason Dufner, also has ties to Dallas National, where his longtime coach Chuck Cook was director of instruction until recently. Dufner matched Spieth’s 67.
The afternoon’s featured group didn’t disappoint. The trio combined for 16 birdies, one eagle and only six bogeys.
“It was awesome playing alongside those guys,” Spieth said. “Two guys I look up to, great American golfers, and playing some solid golf.”
The comfortable grouping helped all three. They seemed to feed off each other.
“I think when everyone’s got a good rhythm, guys are swinging well and having a good time, it helps the morale,” Mahan said. “Just great pace, great rhythm in the round and everything. So it was a fun day.”
Asked what it was like playing with Spieth, Mahan said:
“I’m in awe. His aura and his energy are amazing. He’s a guy who just sees what he wants to do and just kind of goes after it. He sees himself hitting great shots, and he doesn’t see the danger in anything, and that’s a great way to play golf.”
