After winning his second straight major Sunday and getting halfway to the Grand Slam, Jordan Spieth has been nominated for an ESPY for Best Breakthrough Athlete.
The 21-year-old is just the sixth player ever to win the first two majors in the same season and the first to do it since Tiger Woods in 2002. He is also the youngest two-time major champion since Gene Sarazen in 1922 and the youngest U.S. Open champion since Bobby Jones in 1923.
Earlier this year, Spieth tied the Masters’ 72-hole scoring record, set by Tiger Woods in 1997, and became the tournament’s second-youngest champion behind only Woods.
Spieth is halfway to completing the single-season Grand Slam, something only Jones has done, but he achieved that in the pre-Masters era. Woods won all four majors consecutively but did so over two years. No player in the modern era has ever won all four in the same year.
Others up for best breakthrough athlete include New York Giants rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones, and Little League pitcher Mo'ne Davis. You can cast your vote here. The ESPYS awards show will air on ESPN on July 15 at 8 p.m. ET.
