DUBLIN, Ohio — Even for Jordan Spieth, his 62-foot birdie putt at No. 6 during the opening round of The Memorial was at least an 11 on the Richter Scale.

Spieth, making his 14th start at the Jack Nicklaus-hosted event at Muirfield Village, has had an impressive season with eight top-25 finishes in 14 starts, even if he’s yet to get back in the winner’s circle. Through the opening 13 holes on Thursday, Spieth was 2 under and sitting near the top of the leaderboard.

On No. 6, the Texan’s back was facing the hole as he aimed at a target at least 25 feet right of the cup for the big bender. According to Rick Gehman, the 62-foot, 11-inch putt for birdie was the fourth-longest made putt of his career.

“I hit the putt a couple times yesterday,” he said after his round. “and I hit it poorly, like, twice yesterday from a little different place but pretty close. I was just trying to get the right speed. On those putts, I walk up and try to find where the fall line is on top and, you know, see a pitch mark or something where my ball needs to essentially roll around.”

He continued: “I thought it was maybe a foot or so short overall, and as it kept going down I’m, like, it might get there. It’s at the hole. And then it fell off the side of the lip, which was nice.”
